You’ll soon see clear overhead signs for the I-405 entrance. The on-ramp for I-405 North (towards Santa Monica) is a left-hand entrance, so positioning early is key. Paying close attention to motorway signage as soon as you exit the rental facility will help you avoid abrupt, last-minute manoeuvres.

For a lower-stress alternative to the motorway, consider taking Lincoln Boulevard (State Route 1) north directly to Santa Monica. After leaving the rental facility, head towards Lincoln Blvd, which runs parallel to the coast. It’s a surface street with traffic lights, which can be slower than the 405, but is often much more straightforward for visitors. It avoids complex motorway merges and provides a direct route into the heart of Santa Monica.

To reach West Hollywood, a straightforward approach is to take La Cienega Boulevard north. After joining I-405 North from LAX, you can exit on to La Cienega Blvd, or take I-10 East briefly and then exit north on to La Cienega. This major road takes you directly into West Hollywood. As you get close to your hotel, use your navigation for the final turns, but using a main north–south artery like La Cienega for most of the drive helps you avoid smaller, more confusing residential streets.

A very straightforward route to Anaheim is via I-105 East, which has a dedicated entrance from streets around LAX. Take I-105 East for about 17 miles until the interchange for I-605 South. Follow I-605 South for a few miles, then look for signs for CA-91 East. CA-91 East takes you directly into Anaheim. This route is popular because it bypasses the more complex and often congested interchanges in downtown Los Angeles.

The most direct and generally least confusing route for a first-time driver is I-105 East from LAX to I-110 North. The I-105 entrance is well signposted near the airport. Once on I-110 North, you’ll be in an HOV lane that transitions directly into the express lanes leading straight into Downtown LA. This route minimises lane changes and keeps you on major motorways designed for heavy traffic, making the drive into the city centre more predictable.

Driving to the Getty Center is straightforward. From LAX, take I-405 North and look for the clearly signposted Getty Center Drive exit. The exit leads directly to the museum’s dedicated multi-storey car park entrance. You can’t drive your vehicle to the top of the hill; instead, you park in the garage at the base. From there, take the free automated tram up to the museum, which offers excellent views during the ride.

To avoid endlessly hunting for a space at Griffith Observatory, arrive early, especially at weekends. The main car park at the top fills quickly. A reliable strategy is to park further down the hill in the free lots near the Greek Theatre or along the access roads. From there you can either walk uphill or take the convenient DASH Observatory/Los Feliz shuttle bus, which runs frequently and costs a nominal fare, saving you the stress of the congested summit.

For a practical option with manageable parking, consider the Brush Canyon Trail, which starts at the end of Canyon Drive in Griffith Park. They charge a fee, but they’re the most convenient for short visits. If you want to avoid the highest prices, you can often find on-street parking in residential areas a few blocks inland. Just read all posted parking signs carefully for restrictions such as street sweeping times or permit requirements.

SoFi Stadium and the Kia Forum are very close to LAX, but on event days traffic can be extremely heavy. It’s strongly recommended to pre-purchase your parking pass online via the venue’s official site, as lots can sell out. When driving from the rental facility, allow at least an extra hour for congestion on Century Boulevard and nearby streets. Follow the specific directions on your parking pass, as police and event staff often redirect traffic to manage flow.

The easiest approach to Universal Studios is via the US-101. Whether you’re coming from the north or south, look for exits clearly marked for Universal Studios Boulevard or Lankershim Boulevard. The signs are very prominent and designed for tourists. After exiting, you’ll be guided straight towards the main parking structures. Following the large, clear signs for general parking takes you to the entrance without confusing turns.

A realistic plan is to do these areas in a logical geographic order to reduce backtracking. After collecting your car at LAX, drive north to Santa Monica first to enjoy the coast. Then head east on Santa Monica Boulevard or Sunset Boulevard through Beverly Hills to see the famous shopping districts. Continue east on Sunset to reach Hollywood. This linear route lets you experience each area without criss-crossing the city, but expect to spend significant time in traffic between stops.

Koreatown is densely populated and on-street parking can be extremely difficult, especially overnight. Many streets have permit restrictions or require you to move your car early in the morning for street sweeping. The best option is to choose a hotel that offers guest parking, even if it costs extra. If your accommodation doesn’t provide parking, you’ll need to find a public car park that allows overnight stays, as relying on street parking often isn’t viable.

During commuting hours, the most reliable route to Pasadena is often I-105 East from LAX to I-110 North. While I-110 through Downtown LA can be congested, it provides a direct route to Pasadena. This historic motorway, also known as the Arroyo Seco Parkway, has narrow lanes and short exits, so drive attentively. An alternative with fewer merges is I-105 East to I-605 North, then connect to I-210 West, which can sometimes feel less stressful despite being longer.

The simplest and most scenic route to Malibu is the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH), also known as State Route 1. From LAX, drive north through Santa Monica until you reach the PCH. Once you’re on it, you simply follow the coastline north. The road runs along the ocean with great views and passes well-known beaches. As long as you stay on the PCH, you won’t need to worry about complex turns or ending up inland by mistake.

To avoid the worst of LA traffic, try to land mid-morning so you can be on the road by early afternoon. The drive to Santa Barbara is I-405 North to US-101 North. The main bottleneck is getting through the San Fernando Valley. If you can clear the Valley before 3:00 PM, the drive should be much smoother. For a Joshua Tree day trip, aim to be on the road by 7:00 AM at the latest to get ahead of eastbound commuter traffic. The drive is typically around two to three hours without major delays. This iconic roadside attraction has petrol stations and fast-food options, making it a good place to refuel both the car and yourself before heading into the park’s more remote landscape.

For a trip that combines city driving with longer excursions, a compact or mid-size saloon offers the best balance. A smaller car is much easier to manoeuvre and park in crowded areas like West Hollywood, Koreatown, or beach communities where spaces are tight. At the same time, a modern mid-size car offers good comfort and efficiency for day trips to places like Santa Barbara or Joshua Tree. An SUV may be roomier but can be difficult to park on congested city streets.

The parking garages at the LAX ConRAC facility are well lit and spacious, giving you a safe place to install child seats. After completing your rental paperwork with Enterprise, go to your assigned vehicle. If possible, pull the car forward slightly into a more open area of the garage so you have full access to the rear doors without being too close to other vehicles. As you approach LAX on major roads such as Century Boulevard or Sepulveda Boulevard, look for large overhead signs reading "Rental Car Return". They’re prominent and direct you to the dedicated ConRAC entrance. A key landmark is the iconic glowing LAX pylons at the intersection of Century and Sepulveda. The rental return entrance is very close to this junction, so seeing the pylons is a good indicator you’re in the right area.

The most efficient sequence is to enter the main LAX loop and follow signs for the departures level. Drop your passengers and luggage at the kerb for your airline. Then continue following the loop. As you come back towards the airport exit, stay in the far-left lanes and follow signs for airport exit and rental car return. This guides you out of the terminal loop and on to the correct road to access the ConRAC facility entrance.

To reduce stress in peak traffic, avoid approaching on I-405 and exiting directly on to Century Boulevard, as this interchange can back up heavily. A less congested approach is often to use surface streets such as La Cienega Boulevard or Lincoln Boulevard. These routes may have traffic lights but can be more predictable than the motorway. Within about a mile of the airport, watch carefully for "Rental Car Return" signs and move into the designated lane as early as possible.

After dropping off your vehicle at the ConRAC facility, take the same free shuttle bus system back to the terminals. The shuttles run continuously and stop at every terminal in numerical order. Board the next bus available and ride until your terminal is announced, then get off there, regardless of where it sits in the airport loop.

To optimise your first day, plan to pick up your hire car at LAX either mid-morning (around 10:00 AM) or late evening (after 7:30 PM). A mid-morning start helps you miss the inbound morning rush and get out of the LA basin before afternoon outbound traffic builds. Make your first leg the longest drive, from LA to Palm Springs. That sets you up for the shorter, more manageable Palm Springs to San Diego drive on a later day, keeping the trickiest traffic segment at the start of your trip.
