About hiring an SUV in Cbx
Frequently Asked Questions
What does my SUV hire at CBX through Hola Car Rentals include that other companies don't offer?
Hola Car Rentals is the only premium partner of the top car hire brands operating at CBX, giving you exclusive access to our All Inclusive+ rate. This rate includes benefits that no other company can match:
- Free liability coverage starting at US$ 300,000 in case of an accident (applies only to certain rates and itineraries)
- Toll cashback: recover up to 5% of the reservation's total value for toll charges incurred during your hire period
- Premium travel medical assistance providing up to US$ 150,000 in coverage for a maximum of 5 passengers in case of a medical emergency, excluding pre-existing conditions
- No Extra Charges© guarantee: if the counter charges you for something not listed on your confirmation and not an optional add-on you accepted, Hola Car Rentals will work to remove or reimburse the charge after verification
All of this comes at no extra cost, ensuring a fully protected car hire experience and peace of mind throughout your trip at CBX.
Will I face unexpected charges when I hire an SUV at CBX through Hola Car Rentals?
No. With Hola Car Rentals, all costs and charges for your booking at CBX are clearly shown at the time of reservation and in your confirmation email, so you know exactly what you are paying before you arrive at the counter.
On top of that, every Hola Car Rentals booking includes the No Extra Charges© guarantee. This is a pricing guarantee (not insurance) that protects you if the counter at CBX charges you for something that was not listed on your confirmation and was not an optional add-on you accepted. If that happens, Hola Car Rentals will work with the hire partner to remove or reimburse the charge after verification.
The only costs outside this guarantee are:
- Optional add-ons you choose at the counter (GPS, child seats, prepaid fuel)
- Usage-based charges (tolls, fuel shortfall, traffic fines)
Where do I pick up my SUV hire at CBX?
Your SUV hire at CBX is collected directly inside the U.S.-side Arrival Terminal at 2745 Otay Pacific Drive, San Diego, CA 92154. After crossing the pedestrian skywalk bridge from Tijuana Airport, proceed straight into the terminal where hire desks, including Avis and other partner brands, are organised in counter banks for quick processing.
No shuttle or consolidated hire centre is required. The SUV is parked just outside the terminal, so the walk from the counter to your vehicle is short. From the moment you enter the CBX terminal to driving your SUV away, expect roughly 15 to 30 minutes, depending on queue length and document verification.
If you are arriving after counter hours, key drop boxes are located at the return lanes outside the Arrival Terminal for after-hours returns.
Can I drive my CBX SUV hire into Mexico?
No, you cannot drive your CBX SUV hire into Mexico unless the hire agreement explicitly includes a cross-border endorsement with valid Mexico liability cover.
CBX sits directly on the U.S.-Mexico border, and all standard hire agreements prohibit crossing into Mexico without prior authorisation. This is a critical difference from most U.S. hire locations. Attempting to cross the border in an unauthorised SUV hire can result in denial at the border and potential voiding of your insurance cover.
Before collecting your SUV at CBX, confirm the following with the hire partner at the counter:
- Whether your specific SUV category is eligible for cross-border travel
- That Mexico liability insurance is added to the agreement
- Any additional documentation required, such as an FMM tourist card if staying in Mexico more than 7 days
If cross-border travel is not endorsed on your agreement, plan to use your CBX SUV hire exclusively within the United States.
What documents do I need to pick up an SUV hire at CBX?
To collect an SUV hire at CBX, you must present the following physical documents at the counter:
- A valid driving licence in your name, original and unexpired
- A passport as primary photo ID (CBX's border-terminal location means passport verification is standard practice)
- A major credit card with your name printed on the card, in the main driver’s name, for the authorisation hold
- Your booking confirmation or printed voucher
- Round-trip flight or cruise tickets if you are visiting from abroad
If your driving licence uses a non-Latin alphabet, such as Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, or Cyrillic, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is mandatory. For licences in other non-English scripts, an IDP is strongly recommended. The IDP is a translation only and must be carried alongside your original licence.
All documents must be physical. Digital copies are not accepted at the CBX hire counter. If you plan to add an additional driver to your SUV hire, that person must also be present at collection with their own valid licence and ID.
How do toll roads work for an SUV hire at CBX?
California uses the FasTrak electronic toll system on all toll roads, bridges, and express lanes. If you drive your CBX SUV hire on any toll facility, including Southern California express lanes or Orange County toll roads such as SR-73, SR-241, SR-261, and SR-133, tolls are collected electronically with no cash option.
Your SUV hire at CBX will already include an electronic toll device or plate-based billing system. At the counter you have two options:
- Unlimited toll package: a fixed daily rate of approximately US$11 to US$25 per day, covering all toll usage during the hire period
- Pay per use: the hire company charges actual toll amounts plus administrative processing fees, billed to your card after the hire, sometimes weeks later
The San Diego area around CBX has very limited toll exposure on its own. Toll costs increase significantly if you drive north towards Los Angeles express lanes or into Orange County.
You may also opt out of the hire company programme and pay tolls directly through the FasTrak website or toll agency portals, but you must notify the counter agent so the vehicle's default device is deactivated to avoid duplicate charges.
Is a credit card required to hire an SUV at CBX?
Yes, a major credit card in the main driver’s name with the driver’s name printed on the card is required to hire an SUV at CBX.
The credit card is used to place a temporary authorisation hold at collection. For a standard SUV hire in the United States, this hold is typically US$300 to US$400, though the exact amount varies by hire partner, vehicle class, and season. The hold reduces your available credit until it is released after you return the vehicle, which can take up to 15 business days depending on your bank.
- Prepaid cards are not accepted for the deposit
- Debit cards are not accepted for the deposit
- Virtual or single-use card numbers are not accepted
- The card must be physically present at the CBX counter
Note that residents of Southern California renting at CBX may be required to present two major credit cards under the primary renter’s name. Bring a backup credit card in your name as a precaution in case your primary card is declined.
Does Hola Car Rentals offer Tolls Cashback for SUV hires at CBX?
Yes, all SUV hires booked through Hola Car Rentals at CBX include Tolls Cashback, which reimburses up to 5% of your total booking value for tolls paid during your hire.
While the CBX area itself has minimal toll exposure, driving your SUV north towards Los Angeles express lanes or through Orange County toll roads such as SR-73 and SR-241 can add significant toll costs. The Tolls Cashback benefit applies to any FasTrak or cashless toll charges you pay during your hire period.
To claim your cashback after returning your SUV:
- Email [email protected] within 30 days of vehicle return
- Use the subject line: Tolls Cashback - HOLA followed by your confirmation number
- Attach your Hola Car Rentals reservation confirmation, the signed hire agreement, and a toll receipt or statement showing charges paid
Refunds are issued to the original payment method and typically process within 7 to 10 business days after approval. Late submissions received after 30 days are not accepted.
What is the minimum age to hire an SUV at CBX?
The standard minimum age to hire an SUV at CBX without additional surcharges is 25. Drivers aged 21 to 24 may be permitted to hire certain SUV categories but will be subject to a daily young-renter surcharge, and most premium or full-size SUV classes are restricted to renters aged 25 and older.
California is not one of the states (such as New York or Michigan) that legally requires hire companies to serve drivers under 21, so the minimum age at CBX is effectively 21 for eligible vehicle classes with a surcharge.
If you are between 21 and 24 and booking an SUV hire at CBX through Hola Car Rentals with Avis or Budget, and you are a citizen or resident of Latin America or the Caribbean, you may qualify for a young-renter fee waiver on eligible compact or intermediate SUV categories. Check your booking confirmation to see if the waiver is explicitly listed.
All renters, regardless of age, must present a valid driving licence and a major credit card in their name at the CBX counter.
How do I add an additional driver to my SUV hire at CBX?
Yes, you can add an additional driver to your SUV hire at CBX, but the process must be completed in person at the counter during collection.
The additional driver must be physically present at the CBX terminal at the time of collection. They must bring their own valid driving licence and any required ID. If their licence uses a non-Latin alphabet, an IDP is also required. Both the main driver and the additional driver must sign the hire agreement before leaving the counter.
Additional driver fees at CBX vary by partner:
- Avis, Budget, and Payless: approximately US$13 per hire day, capped at US$65 per hire period, plus taxes
- Hertz, Thrifty, and Dollar: approximately US$13.50 per hire day, capped at US$189 per hire period, plus taxes
- Alamo, National, and Enterprise: approximately US$15 per day, plus taxes
Some Hola Car Rentals rates include one additional driver at no extra cost. Check your booking confirmation for the line that reads additional driver free of charge before arriving at the CBX counter. Only drivers listed on the hire agreement are covered by the SUV's insurance protections.
What travel assistance is included with my SUV hire at CBX?
Most SUV hires booked through Hola Car Rentals at CBX include travel assistance coverage provided by Terrawind Global Protection at no extra cost. This benefit is particularly relevant at CBX given its location near the U.S.-Mexico border and Southern California highway corridors.
Coverage typically includes:
- Travel insurance with medical cover for up to 5 passengers
- Legal assistance in the event of an accident
- Compensation for luggage lost by the airline
- Flight cancellation insurance
This cover does not apply to damage to the SUV itself (that is handled by CDW or LDW) or to third-party liability (covered by LIS or SLI).
To reach assistance 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, call +1 888 980 9992 (toll-free) or contact WhatsApp at +1 208 910 1001. Have your Hola Car Rentals confirmation number ready when you call.
Important: this travel assistance benefit applies only to non-North American customers. Renters who are residents of the United States or Canada do not qualify for this benefit. Check your booking confirmation for the exact terms and coverage limits that apply to your CBX SUV hire.
Can I return my CBX SUV hire to a different city?
Yes, one-way SUV hires are available at CBX, but a drop-off fee may apply depending on your return location and the hire partner.
The drop-off fee is route-specific and varies by hire company, distance, vehicle class, and season. Larger vehicles such as SUVs can carry higher repositioning fees than economy cars. The fee is not included in your prepaid rate and must be paid at the counter or billed after the hire.
When booking your one-way CBX SUV hire, the drop-off fee will appear under the To pay at destination section on the Hola Car Rentals checkout page if it applies to your route. Review this before confirming your booking.
Cross-border one-way returns, for example returning a CBX SUV hire to a location in Mexico, are generally not permitted unless the hire agreement explicitly authorises cross-border travel with the appropriate insurance endorsement. Confirm cross-border one-way eligibility directly with the hire partner at the CBX counter before departure.
What insurance is included in an SUV hire at CBX?
The insurance included in your CBX SUV hire depends on the rate plan you selected at booking. Standard U.S. rates through Hola Car Rentals typically offer two plan levels.
Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) or Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) reduces your financial liability for damage to the SUV itself from a collision, theft, or vandalism. A deductible may apply unless your confirmation explicitly states zero deductible. CDW and LDW do not cover damage you cause to other vehicles or people.
Third-party liability (LIS or SLI) covers bodily injury and property damage you may cause to others while driving the SUV. Some U.S. states require a minimum level of liability, but not all do. At CBX, given the proximity to the border, confirming that your liability cover is active and valid for California roads is especially important.
Neither CDW nor LIS covers driving the SUV into Mexico unless a separate Mexico liability endorsement is added at the CBX counter.
Optional add-ons available at the counter may include personal accident insurance and personal effects cover. Review your Hola Car Rentals confirmation before arriving at CBX to understand exactly what is included in your SUV rate.
What is the fuel policy for an SUV hire at CBX?
The standard fuel policy for an SUV hire at CBX is Full to Full. You receive the SUV with a full tank and must return it full to avoid fuel charges.
At collection, verify the fuel gauge with the counter agent and confirm the starting level is recorded on the hire agreement. Take a photo of the dashboard showing the odometer and fuel gauge before leaving the CBX terminal.
When returning your SUV, refuel within approximately 10 miles of the CBX return location. The CBX terminal itself does not have on-site fueling, so plan to stop at a petrol station en route before returning to the terminal at 2745 Otay Pacific Drive.
If you return the SUV below the recorded starting level, you may be charged:
- A fuel shortfall at the hire partner's refuelling rate, which is typically higher than retail pump prices
- A refuelling service or administrative fee
Keep your final fuel receipt showing the date, time, and station address. For after-hours SUV returns at CBX, leave the receipt in the key drop envelope and keep a photo of the full gauge on your phone as documentation.
Do I need an International Driving Permit for an SUV hire at CBX?
An International Driving Permit (IDP) is mandatory for your CBX SUV hire if your driver’s licence uses a non-Latin alphabet, such as Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, or Cyrillic. For all other foreign licences not issued in English or by an EU or EEA country, an IDP is strongly recommended, though not always strictly required.
CBX's location as a border-terminal hybrid means document checks can be more thorough than at a standard U.S. airport. Having an IDP alongside your original licence reduces the risk of any issue at the counter.
Key points to remember:
- The IDP is a translation only and must be carried together with your original licence, not as a replacement
- Obtain your IDP in your home country before travelling, as U.S. issuers such as AAA do not issue IDPs to non-U.S. licence holders
- All documents presented at the CBX counter must be physical originals; digital copies are not accepted
If you are unsure whether your licence requires an IDP for your CBX SUV hire, contact Hola Car Rentals customer service via WhatsApp at +1 786 999-8312 before your travel date.
