Driving to another resort for a dining reservation is common. When you arrive at the resort security gate, tell the cast member you have a dining reservation and be ready to show photo ID. That gives you plenty of time to enjoy your meal and look around the resort’s lobby and grounds before you leave.

Driving from the Disney resort area to Universal Orlando is relatively easy and typically takes about 15–25 minutes without heavy traffic. The most direct route is to take I-4 East for a few miles and follow the clear signs for the Universal Orlando Resort exit. Universal has two massive parking garages serving its theme parks and CityWalk. There are several convenient options for a grocery stop between MCO and Disney. The Lee Vista Promenade area, just a few minutes north of the airport, has several major supermarkets and restaurants. Another popular choice is stopping in the Lake Buena Vista area along SR 535, which is very close to the eastern entrances of Disney property. Planning a stop at one of these locations lets you stock up on snacks, drinks, and breakfast items before you check into your hotel.

There are several conveniently located petrol stations on Walt Disney World property, including three Speedway stations. One is near the Magic Kingdom car care centre, another is near the BoardWalk resort area, and a third is opposite Disney Springs. Losing GPS signal can be disorientating, but Disney’s road system has excellent physical signage. If your phone cuts out, slow down safely and start following the large, colour-coded overhead signs. They clearly direct you to all theme parks, resorts, and Disney Springs. It’s also wise to download offline maps of the Orlando area to your phone before your trip as a reliable backup, so you have navigation even without a mobile signal.

Orlando summer thunderstorms can develop quickly and dramatically affect driving conditions. They often bring torrential rain, which reduces visibility and makes roads slick. Slow down, increase your following distance, and make sure your headlights are on. Watch out for aquaplaning and avoid driving through large puddles or flooded areas. It’s essential to allow at least an extra hour of travel time for the drive to the airport. The easiest time to switch hotels during a split stay is midday, between late morning and early afternoon (around 11:00 am to 2:00 pm). By then, the morning rush has ended and afternoon traffic hasn’t started building yet. This window lets you check out of your Disney resort after the morning peak and drive to your airport-area hotel with minimal traffic.
