At MAD Terminal 4, counters sit on the lower level (Floor -1); at BCN, some providers run off-site facilities with shuttle buses — allow an extra 20 to 30 minutes if your confirmation shows an off-airport pickup. Demand peaks between June and September, particularly in coastal regions, so booking SUVs well in advance is advisable since larger vehicle classes sell out faster than compact cars. Spain's autopista toll network (roads marked "AP") accepts cash or card at booths, and some rental companies offer a Via-T electronic transponder for a daily fee that lets you use dedicated fast lanes; without it, you queue at staffed plazas. Fuel runs around EUR 1.57 per litre, and most stations are self-service with card payment accepted. Both Madrid and Barcelona operate Low-Emission Zones: rental SUVs carry a DGT environmental sticker, but access to the most restricted central areas of Madrid is limited even for vehicles with a "C" rating. Budget for a deposit hold of EUR 150 to EUR 400 or more on a credit card in the primary driver's name — no debit cards are accepted.
